ABOUT

Hello! My name is Amy Edwards, I'm a 27 year old pastel artist living in the UK. I first fell in love with art when I was 7 years old, where my passion for horses truly began. Like many young girls, I was completely captivated by the movie "Spirit: Stallion of the cimarron." The DVD featured a tutorial by James Baxter of how to draw Spirit, and I would spend hours every day in front of the TV, pausing the DVD and copying it detail by detail, determined to draw the character that I loved so dearly. It quickly became an obsession, and by age 8, my mind was set that this was what I wanted to do in life. I was determined to become a professional artist, and spent every day practicing. Even at school I would be doodling away all day long. Horses are a massive passion for me, and are the entire reason I became an artist. So I hold them most dearly in my heart.

I have always been an animal lover, owning many horses, cats and dogs through my younger years. Being a visual minded person, I found this very helpful to improve. Being able to feel the bones in the face, study every muscle and detail up close and see it from every angle, was something I found invaluable to my improvement.

Years ago, I suffered the loss of a very important horse to me, he was my best friend and soulmate, and it absolutely crushed me to see him go. For this reason, I have a deep passion and commitment to trying to capture the life and essence of my subjects souls onto the page. I want to create a portrait that immortalises them, to be cherished long after they leave us. I never want to forget his face or his character, and it is my biggest dream to offer this comfort to the clients that I produce work for.

I first got into pastel when I was 15. I had experimented with a few different surfaces, but pastels were one that matched my personal style so well. I love how it allows you to work with your fingers and hands, and how you can get such precision but without sacrificing the richness of the colours. The resulting look can differ quite noticeably between the different paper surfaces, and I love this aspect of it. I've always been drawn to very vibrant colours, my earliest works will reveal highly dramatic, clashing colours, and the most deep and vibrant shades I could possibly use. I am trying to evolve my art and style all of the time, like any artist, I am never fully satisfied with myself until I feel like I am as good as I can possibly be. I look forward to continuing my journey and growing with each year that passes.
